Vital support for a vital institution
Every year, Norwalk Community College (NCC) makes higher education accessible and affordable for more than 12,000 students, including recent high school graduates, working professionals, and returning learners.
With a focus on associate degrees and certificate programs, as well as workforce development and continuing education, NCC attracts students who plan to enter professions that are essential to Fairfield County. Signature NCC programs include nursing and allied health, culinary arts, sustainable technology, and early childhood education.
NCC is “state assisted,” which means it is funded through a combination of state appropriations, federal and state grants, tuition and fees, and philanthropy. As public funds have decreased, private support for scholarships, programs, faculty development, and capital improvements is more important than ever.
NCCF scholarships tip the balance for low-income students
The possibility of a better life begins with higher education. The NCC Foundation nourishes students of promise who with determination and perseverance transform their lives through education. These remarkable students are creating better lives for their families and improving the economic health of Fairfield County.
The Norwalk Community College Foundation awards nearly $1 million dollars in academic scholarships to more than 400 students each year. Our support makes all the difference to students who have the ambition to realize their goals, often while raising families or working full time.
NCC Foundation scholarships support students with financial need who have demonstrated success and commitment in their coursework. The majority of these are funded by over 110 endowed scholarships established by extraordinarily generous donors. Because these scholarships are funded in perpetuity, they have helped thousands of NCC students begin meaningful careers in professions vital to Fairfield County, including nursing and allied health, culinary arts, sustainable technology, and early childhood education.
Our scholarships assist incoming and current NCC students, and also reward NCC’s top scholars with tuition support when they transfer to four-year institutions through the LEAP Transfer Scholarship Program. LEAP Scholarship recipients have transferred to a diverse group of colleges including Cornell University, Smith College, Columbia University, University of Virginia, University of Connecticut, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
In partnership with Fairfield County Community Foundation, NCCF also participates in an innovative pilot program that provides scholarships and comprehensive services to low-to-moderate wage NCC students who are primary wage earners with dependents. The goal of this program is to create family economic security.
In addition to awarding tuition scholarships, NCCF also helps high-achieving, low-income students with other school-related expenses including the cost of textbooks, transportation, and childcare.
NCCF raised $20 million for the Center for Science, Health and Wellness
Through The Campaign for Norwalk Community College, NCCF raised approximately $20 million toward the construction and outfitting of the new Center for Science, Health and Wellness as well as programming and scholarships for the students who use this state-of-the-art facility.
The Center includes simulation laboratories that exactly mirror the facilities and equipment found in Norwalk, Stamford, and Greenwich hospitals. Students in NCC’s nursing, respiratory therapy, and other allied health programs practice their skills on sophisticated simulated patients called Sim-Men while being videotaped and monitored by faculty members.
In addition to creating a learning environment that rivals that of any four-year institution, the Center for Science, Health and Wellness is the first Connecticut community college facility to receive LEED Gold certification, signifying the highest level of sustainable design and construction.
Ongoing support for faculty development and academic excellence
NCCF responds to current student and faculty needs, funds specific programs, and jumpstarts important initiatives.
The NCC Foundation enhances the quality of existing academic programs, develops strategic initiatives and promotes faculty excellence through professional development, technology and skills training.
Recently our support allowed several members of the NCC nursing faculty to attend an advanced course in simulation development and bring their advanced techniques and teaching materials back to their students.
In every discipline, we are ready to make the difference as NCC pushes to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
NCCF also supports the library and other campus-wide resources. In fall 2012, we helped bring “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” to campus. The project included a major exhibit and a number of related public and scholarly events.
