The Bridgewater Scholars Pilot Program

2020-06-15T20:36:23-04:00
The Foundation is grateful and proud of the new partnership established this year with Bridgewater Associates.  Bridgewater Scholars piloted a uniquely personal mentoring group designed to bring together professional women from Bridgewater and high-achieving NCC Foundation scholarship women for a series of experiential workshops on topics such as essential business skills, business small talk, key traits of successful people, and balancing work and personal lives. Though we aren’t completely surprised, the best take-away from the program was how quickly the women got real with one another. They didn’t waste any time in opening up about both personal and professional challenges, and the group quickly formed a close bond.

Faculty and staff get creative in their efforts to recognize students

2020-06-15T20:34:50-04:00
Above left, a special graphic to cheer on graduates from the Career Development and Experiential Learning team.  At right Dr. Anne Hermans, Program Coordinator of the Veterinary Technology program, shared a photo from a “Gradzoomation” event she held with her students.  “We had completely unofficial class awards for each student that I mailed out to them, and an interactive game,” Professor Hermans said. The online gathering provided celebratory spirit for all involved. Professor Hermans also added it was, “the first time I’ve worn graduation regalia with fuzzy slippers.”

A Look Back on Studying From Home

2020-05-29T21:12:40-04:00

Over the last few months we asked our Foundation scholars to send us their “work from home” selfies. We heard how much they missed NCC and their classmates as the classroom became their living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. Many studied alongside their partners, children and pets, and juggled additional work and family responsibilities.

We are proud of all our scholars for remaining focused, and successfully completing the 2019-20 academic year!

If you want to help Norwalk Community College students achieve their academic and professional goals, consider a gift to the NCC Foundation

NCC Instructors Grateful for Foundation’s Emergency Student Aid

2020-05-15T19:31:40-04:00

We have heard firsthand from NCC professors about the transition to online learning and the impact of Foundation contributions on the lives of their students.

“I teach anatomy and physiology and I had students who, after the classes moved online, were taking the class on their cell phones,” Jonathan McMenamin-Balano, NCC Biology Professor and Honors Program Coordinator told us. “They were able to get laptops from the Foundation and successfully complete the class.  If the Foundation hadn’t stepped in, the students wouldn’t have been able to.”

Scholar Stories: Eyline

2020-05-05T20:23:40-04:00

“I wake up every day motivated,” NCC transfer scholar Eyline tells us.  Despite being only in her first semester at UConn and losing her job because of COVID-19, her determination exemplifies why keeping students on track with their academic goals is more essential now than ever.  Before successfully graduating from NCC and transferring to UConn in December, Elyse was also one of our Academic Year scholars and joined the Foundation’s mentorship program with Bridgewater Associates.

Scholar Stories: Shahida

2020-05-01T17:57:19-04:00

This week we are wishing a swift recovery to a very brave Foundation scholar, Shahida.  Shahida earned an NCC Foundation Scholarship for 2019-20.  In addition to being a full-time student, she was also working at a local grocery store, until she tested positive for COVID-19.  Shahida sent us a photo from quarantine at home, where she is still studying and told us more about her experience.

NCC Loans Three Ventilators to Norwalk Hospital

2020-04-01T19:11:59-04:00
Above, technicians from Norwalk Hospital roll away NCC’s ventilators to transport to the hospital.
NCC Foundation Executive Director Carrie Bernier and NCC CEO Cheryl DeVonish responded quickly to the COVID-19 crisis by coordinating the transfer of urgently needed equipment to Norwalk Hospital. NCC has loaned its three ventilators as Norwalk Hospital was in dire need for such equipment.  The particular models of ventilators donated were originally selected so that NCC students could train on the same equipment used by area hospitals.  This means Norwalk Hospital staff will be familiar with the donated equipment and it can be put to immediate use in treating COVID-19 patients.
