Honoring Valor: The Daniel J. Shea Memorial Scholarship

In solemn recognition of Memorial Day, the NCC Foundation proudly announced the creation of the Daniel J. Shea Memorial Scholarship at the City of Norwalk’s annual Veterans Memorial Ceremony, held at Calf Pasture Beach on May 18.

PFC Daniel John Shea, a Norwalk native, served as a combat medic during the Vietnam War. His extraordinary heroism—saving multiple comrades under heavy fire—earned him the Medal of Honor, posthumously. His actions reflected the highest traditions of military service and enduring selflessness.

NCC Foundation CFO Kris Yeager delivered remarks during the ceremony and officially unveiled the new scholarship. “This scholarship will serve as a legacy of courage and selflessness,” said Yeager. “It’s about making sure the next generation remembers and is empowered by what Daniel stood for.”

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving CT State Norwalk student who has demonstrated commitment to service or public impact, continuing PFC Shea’s spirit through education.

As we honor those who gave all, we also build a bridge to the future—where sacrifice inspires scholarship, and memory becomes momentum.

Community Nourishment: Wegmans Joins the Fight Against Food Insecurity

Local support grows for the CT State Norwalk Food Pantry

Food insecurity shouldn’t be part of the college experience—but for many students, it still is. That’s why the CT State Norwalk Food Pantry remains one of the most critical initiatives supported by the NCC Foundation. Thanks to a generous community and new partners like Wegmans, that impact is growing.

Earlier this month, The Pantry received a special donation to help stock its shelves from Wegmans, whose grand opening is set for late July in the Norwalk community. The beloved grocery store chain is already proving to be more than just a great place to shop—they’re stepping in as thoughtful neighbors.

From canned goods and fresh produce to hygiene supplies and grab-and-go snacks, The Pantry provides essentials to students facing financial challenges.

“The Pantry helps students stay focused on their education instead of worrying about their next meal,” said Nancy von Euler, president and CEO of the NCC Foundation. “Partnerships like this make that possible.”

In a time when the cost of living continues to rise, this kind of support is more than generous—it’s essential. As we welcome Wegmans to Norwalk, we also celebrate all who donate time, food, or funds to ensure every student has what they need to succeed.

Six Months In: A Reflection from the Communications Manager

It’s hard to believe it’s already been six months since I joined the NCC Foundation. Coming from the corporate world, I knew I wanted to do something that felt more connected to community, and this role seemed like the right step. What I didn’t realize was just how far the Foundation’s impact really goes.

I’ve met or heard from alumni and scholarship recipients from all over the country, and the common thread is this deep connection to CT State Norwalk. I went to a community college myself and had a good experience—but not the same strong emotional tie I’ve seen from so many of our alumni and students here. There is a real sense of pride in this place.

The students continue to amaze me. Their motivation, their drive—it’s hard not to be inspired by them. And the stories I hear again and again make it clear: scholarships aren’t just about money. They’re about being seen and supported. The Scholarship Celebration in April really brought that home for me.

Watching students connect with the people who believe in them was a moment I’ll never forget.

If I had to sum up the past six months in one word, it would be “inspiring.” This work, and these people, make me want to be better—every single day.

Michael P. Cichowicz’s Journey from NCC to the Kansas Supreme Court

Michael P. Cichowicz’s journey from Norwalk Community College (now CT State Norwalk) to the Kansas Supreme Court Office of Judicial Administration is a testament to determination, service, and lifelong learning.

At NCC, Cichowicz earned multiple scholarships, took part in service-learning projects, and was an active Phi Theta Kappa member. He also volunteered with ConnCap and was recognized at the College’s Men of Promise and Distinction banquet for overcoming significant challenges.

After NCC, he earned a B.S. in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Rhode Island, followed by a master’s in counseling from the University of Bridgeport and an MBA from the University of Texas at Tyler. Despite having already transferred to URI, he remained committed to completing his associate degree at NCC while working in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness—a decision that reflects his deep appreciation for the College’s impact on his life.

His career spans multiple states and leadership roles. He has served as director of continuing legal education for the Kansas Bar Association, a career services specialist at Washburn University, and executive director of Community Assisting Military Personnel and Veterans (CampV) in Texas. Now, as a court education specialist for the Kansas Supreme Court, he continues to shape legal education and professional development.

Cichowicz credits NCC with laying the foundation for his success. “I took pride in the fact that I graduated from a community college, so I made sure to complete my degree there before starting my bachelor’s,” he shared. “Without NCC, I’m not sure where I’d be today.” His story is a powerful reminder of how the NCC Foundation transforms lives and creates opportunities for the Norwalk community.

A Standing Ovation for Community Support: NCCF Partners with Norwalk Symphony and New Paradigm Theatre

Music, theater, and community spirit came together in a powerful way as the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra and New Paradigm Theatre took the stage for their vibrant performances of Oklahoma! But beyond the stage, this event had a deeper purpose—giving back. As the nonprofit partner for this production, the Norwalk Community College Foundation (NCCF) was honored to support the CT State Norwalk Food Pantry, which provides critical assistance to students facing food insecurity.

With over 4,000 student visits to the pantry last semester alone, the need is clear. The Norwalk Symphony and New Paradigm Theatre recognized this challenge and encouraged audiences to bring non-perishable food donations, helping to stock the pantry’s shelves while enjoying a night of spectacular performances. Their generosity—along with that of our community members—demonstrates the power of the arts to inspire action and make a substantial difference.

“We are proud to partner with organizations that not only enrich our cultural landscape but also share our commitment to student success,” said Nancy von Euler, President and CEO of the NCC Foundation.

The CT State Norwalk Food Pantry continues to be a vital resource, and ongoing support is essential. If you’d like to learn more about how you can contribute, visit ncc-foundation.org or explore more about our partners at Norwalk Symphony and CT State Norwalk Food Pantry.

The Impact of Giving

Over 4,000 visits were recorded at the food pantry during the Fall semester.

Thanksgiving is always a wonderful time to see gratitude and generosity in action, and 2024 was no exception. Thanks to your support and the Alliance for Community Empowerment the food pantry distributed Thanksgiving meal bags to over 50 students and their families.

Following the Thanksgiving event, the Holiday Giveaway took place in December, with food pantry staff and Project Search students distributing Christmas dinners and sweets. Community outreach projects such as these demonstrate the NCC Foundation’s commitment to the Barrier Busters pillar of the 2024-2027 Strategic Plan. This investment directly supports students and strengthens the Norwalk community.
